'Lily's Lovelies' set for 100km fund-raising walk in memory of popular teenager Lily Webster

A Stowmarket mum hoping to spare other families the tragedy of losing loved ones to sudden adult death syndrome will walk 100km next month.

Melanie Webster's daughter Lily, 15, died from a rare heart condition during a trampolining lesson in January 2012.

Ever since, the Stowmarket High School pupil's family and friends have raised funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

The £68,000 raised so far has funded annual heart screening days in Stowmarket. Already, 1,000 people have been screened, with life-changing results for some.

"We have had a great community response to our efforts for CRY ," said Melanie.

"We know of some who had results they weren't expecting – they contacted us much later to say they were pleased they'd had the opportunity to be screened. There's definitely two people who have had quite life-changing treatment as a result.

"It is comforting to know someone else's family won't go through what we did."

On September 8, Lily's Lovelies – Melanie, aunt Jenni Salt and friends Ruth Welsh and Claire Thompson – will walk the 100km Thames Path Challenge from Putney Bridge to Henley.
