Man jailed after Bury St Edmunds pensioner told her fingers would be cut off unless she handed over rings during knifepoint burglary
A man has been jailed after two pensioners were threatened at knifepoint in their Bury St Edmunds home – with one victim told her fingers would be cut off unless she handed over her rings.
Jordan Carr, 32, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on February 17 where he was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with an extended licence period of four years.
Carr initially denied a charge of aggravated burglary but changed his plea to guilty on the fifth day of a trial in December last year.
It follows an incident in Norman Road shortly before 11pm on August 11, 2018, when the victims - a man and woman in their 70s - were watching television in separate rooms of a bungalow.
The man was sitting in the kitchen when two men came in through the back door wearing balaclavas.
The victim stood up and one of the men held a knife to his chin and told him to sit down and stay where he was.
The same man then began searching the kitchen drawers and at one point the victim tried to get up and grab something to defend himself, at which point he was pushed to the floor by the man in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, the other suspect went into the hallway, cut the phone line and then confronted the second victim who was in a bedroom.
He held a knife towards her and demanded she gave him money.
He spotted she was wearing a number of rings and ordered her to take them off or he would cut her fingers off.
Once she handed over the rings, he pushed her down on to the bed and left the room, emptying the contents of her handbag as he went.
The two suspects left the bungalow and, after the victims checked on each other, the man went to a neighbour’s house to call the police.
The following morning, police attended an address in Lancaster Avenue where they arrested Carr, along with another man and a woman.
Carr had a rucksack, which was found to contain boxes of cigarettes and pouches of tobacco identified as belonging to the elderly man.
His wedding ring was also found stuffed down the side of a sofa.
A 46-year-old man, who had also been charged in connection with the incident, was found not guilty following a trial in December last year.
The court heard that Carr is currently serving a five-year prison term for robbery, which he was sentenced for in September 2020.
The latest sentence will run consecutively to the previous one which means he will serve a total of 16 years in prison.
