McColl's manager Darren Ward sets up box scheme to deliver essential supplies to Southgate residents in Bury St Edmunds

Residents who are self-isolating in the Southgate area of Bury St Edmunds due to the coronavirus crisis can have essential supplies delivered to their doors thanks to a new initiative.

Darren Ward, manager of the McColl’s store in the Hardwick precinct, has set up the scheme which will see staff at his shop pack boxes with essential items - which can be altered to cater to individual needs - and deliver them to vulnerable people.

“It’s bad enough being stuck at home never mind worrying about being without food,” said Darren, who lives in Sudbury.

“We want to do our part for the local community and let them know we care and are here to help.”

The boxes can contain items such as milk, cheese, bread, fresh vegetables and a newspaper.

To request a box, phone the store on 01284 724690.
