Mixed views raised over Esso Garage, in Tollgate Lane, Bury St Edmunds, advertisement plans

Mixed views have been raised over a fuel station’s advertisement plans.

Motor Fuel Group has applied to West Suffolk Council to install a five-metre high EV pole sign at its Esso Garage in Tollgate Lane, Bury St Edmunds.

The totem would follow MFG’s branding; its logo would be at the bottom, in the middle would be text reading ‘EV Power: Super Fast Charging’ while at the top would be a plug and lead-style illustration.

The sign would be illuminated and would be installed at the corner of the site to make it as visible as possible to oncoming vehicles.

Bury Town Council has recommended the plans be approved.

However, a resident at the nearby Hanover Close development has registered a strong objection, saying to planners ‘this application needs to be rejected’.

They said it does not give details on the intensity and spread of the illumination and how long it would be on per day.

The resident said Hanover Close properties and other nearby residents already suffer ‘from considerable nuisance’ stemming from the garage and the expansion of its facilities.

They highlighted dangers caused to residents by actions at the garage from drivers, including perceived illegal use by drivers who park to consume goods from the Greggs, sat-nav misdirection caused by poorly positioned and vague signage and people trying to circumnavigate the Tollgate roundabout.

A decision on the application is due by July 11.
