Mother praises 'outstanding' care at West Suffolk Hospital after five-month-old daughter diagnosed with coronavirus

A mother has described the ‘heartbreaking’ moment her five-month-old daughter was diagnosed with coronavirus and praised the ‘outstanding’ care she received at West Suffolk Hospital.

Emily Woodger, 25, is self-isolating with daughter Amelia, who was discharged from hospital last Tuesday after testing positive for Covid-19.

Mrs Woodger, of Brandon, said they were ‘one of the lucky ones’ given the severity of the virus, which has claimed the lives of 15 patients at West Suffolk Hospital.

She and husband Connor, 26, realised something was wrong on Saturday, April 4 when Amelia was sleepy and had a high temperature.

They called 111 who said their daughter was potentially coming down with chicken pox. But when Amelia’s conditions became worse, they were told to go to A&E.

She was admitted for tests and on Monday, when the doctor came in wearing full personal protective equipment to deliver the coronavirus test results, Mrs Woodger knew her daughter had the disease.

“It’s so heartbreaking to see someone so little so poorly and know you can’t help them," she said.

"Each day she was slowly getting better.”

After being discharged last Tuesday, they were told to self isolate for 14 days.

Mrs Woodger and her husband have also had coronavirus symptoms.

She praised the ‘outstanding and amazing’ care at the hospital and Amelia is now in ‘good spirits’.

“We’re one of the lucky ones,” she said. “They always say there’s light at the end of the tunnel - we’ve reached that light.”
