Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket MP Dr Peter Prinsley opens new office at heart of constituency town
A Suffolk MP has opened a new office at the heart of one of his constituency’s market towns.
Dr Peter Prinsley, MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, opened the HQ nearly a year after being elected for what had been considered a safe blue seat.
The Labour MP will be holding surgeries from his new office in 4 Market Place, in the heart of Stowmarket.
Dr Prinsley, who cut the red ribbon with the help of his wife, Dr Marian Prinsley, said it had been a very exciting day.
“It did feel to me like putting the office in Stowmarket made sense,” he said, “there had never previously been any parliamentary office here, it felt like the right thing to do.
“Stowmarket is a really lovely little town, and we are very pleased to be able to be here.”
Dr Prinsley and his staff had been using the space for several months but had to delay the opening date until security provisions could be organised.
In attendance yesterday were a range of his party’s members, businesspeople, councillors and council leaders.
Cllr Cliff Waterman, West Suffolk Council’s leader, said the opening was great news for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket and praised the MP for his active work in the community.
He said: “I think it’s fair to say everyone who meets him is impressed by his charm, but more than that by his determination – we are really lucky to have such a fabulous MP.” He’s saying ‘here I am, come talk to me’ and I think that’s what an MP should be doing.”
Diane Hind, a district councillor who attended as a private individual, added: “Ever since he arrived, he’s been an absolute breath of fresh air, he’s so genuinely interested in people – I really greatly admire him.”
His office will employ four people regularly, in a mix of part-time and full-time roles, as well as eventually have a place for internships and work experience opportunities.
Dr Prinsley said: “I’m usually here at the end of the week – I hope people might spot me, we’re definitely open to people coming to see us.”
