Production of 9 to 5 The Musical comes to the West Suffolk College stage in Bury St Edmunds next week

A new production of the musical ‘9 to 5’ will be clocking in at a theatre in Bury St Edmunds next week.

The show is being produced by Conservatoire EAST, the performing arts arm that is part of West Suffolk College, and runs from May 14 to 17.

The show was originally a smash hit film that first aired in 1980 and helped make Dolly Parton a global superstar.

This production will be a platform to hopefully help local talent from Suffolk do the same.

The plot sees a sexist boss called Frankin Hart treating women as nothing more than sex objects. But the three main female leads plot their revenge as they seek to put the hapless Hart in his place, by shining a light on the importance of equality.

The show is being directed by Lottie Pook, a performing arts lecturer at West Suffolk College, and she can’t wait for people to see the show.

Lottie said: “Bringing 9 to 5 to life has been so much fun. This musical captures the humour, resilience, and camaraderie of working women navigating the challenges of the 70s’ workplace.

“I am so proud to present a show that celebrates the strength of women willing to stand up for themselves and fight back.”

One of the cast members is Caitlin Chenery, 17, from Bury, who is playing Violet Newstead.

Caitlin said: “The story is all about girlpower. It’s very funny, humorous, uplifting, empowering and there are some great songs and dancing.”

Another actor in the show is Deacon Fisher, 16, also from Bury. He said: “I play the evil arrogant boss. It’s uncomfortable playing him but the show needs a villain. It’s my first lead role and I’m excited by it. There is a serious message throughout, but it’s a fun and exciting show.”

The show is being performed at the Conservatoire EAST Theatre, in Out Risbygate, Bury.
