Bury St Edmunds bike train project begins tomorrow
A new project to get children cycling to school safely kicks off tomorrow in Bury St Edmunds.
The Bury Bike Train project is run by EcoCarriers BSE with support from Bury St Edmunds Town Council, and will see pupils riding their bikes to and from school in a group supported by adult cyclists.
The two schools involved in the trail on Thursday are Guildhall Feoffment School and St Edmund's School.
The Bike Train’s ‘Great Northern’ route will run every Thursday between Marham Park and school via the Howard estate from September 15.
The free bike fix and learn-to-ride sessions and the group rides that were put on to prepare school children were a success over the weekend.
Libby Ranzetta, Director at EcoCarriers BSE, said: “Both sessions over the weekend went really well. Lots of adults and children came and got their bikes checked over.
"One little boy came along and could hardly ride his bike but we were able to set his bike up better for him.
"He was then racing around the car park and we couldn’t get him off his bike."
Ms Ranzetta is looking forward to a future where every school has a bike train in place.
She said: "It’s so exciting. The dream is that every school has a bike chain. We want every kid to be able to choose to cycle to school.
"We hope this project will remove a lot of cars from doing the school run and it also gives the children the chance to get in some exercise too."
