New cycle hub to be installed at Bury St Edmunds rail station in £200,000 project

A new cycle hub is to be installed at Bury St Edmunds rail station in a £200,000 project.

The hub, which replaces the former car wash waiting room at the northern entrance to the station off Fornham Road, will offer 52 cycle spaces.

A new walking and cycle path as well as speed bumps will be installed on the northern approach to the station.

The work is due to start later this month and is expected to be completed in the spring.

It has been paid for with the help of the Department for Transport through funds managed by Sustrans, Suffolk County Council and West Suffolk Council.

Cllr Indy Wijenayaka, cabinet member for growth at West Suffolk, said it has provided funding for the project via the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

“Ensuring residents can access public transport through active travel opportunities improves physical health and enhances community wellbeing,” he said.

“This investment has also improved cycle access to the station, by developing infrastructure that supports sustainable growth, reduces traffic pollution, promotes better connectivity and builds upon environmental resilience.”

As part of the cycle hub, there will be a special access-controlled space for 16 cycles, offering additional security.

Access to the controlled area will be via a SMART Card, which can be purchased for £25 per year at https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/travel-information/your-journey/cycling
