Iron Island gym in Bury St Edmunds’ Western Way to bring Polynesian culture of ‘island roots and family values’ to fitness lovers

A new gym, which aims to bring ‘island roots and family values’ to fitness fanatics, is set to open in Bury St Edmunds.

Iron Island, based at Miro House, in Western Way, is due to open in the coming weeks and is the brainchild of a group of nine friends and family – Lewis Jones, Ratu Bevu, Peni Bevu, Stuart Clarke, Dean James, Gary Page, Tom Dolden, Nas Bevu and Pele Bevu.

Formerly a printing works, the site is in the process of being converted into a state-of-the-art performance centre with cardio and gym equipment custom made to the owners’ specifications and a 20m running track.

One of the owners, Dean James, said: “Iron Island has a Polynesian culture behind it.

“Our ethos is island roots and family values – at the centre of our ethos is making sure family is first. That’s why when we designed the place, we wanted to have a few charities involved as well.”

The gym features top Hammer Strength equipment, including a Hammer Strength box – a multi functional gym rig. It will be the only gym in the UK to own this piece of branded equipment and will become a flagship gym for the company.

There will also be two sauna rooms, a studio room for spin classes, a cryotherapy chamber, which can drop to minus 140 degrees, and another room for manicures, pedicures and laser hair removal – run by a partner of one of the owners.

Additionally, there will be a nutritionist who can offer guidance through seminars when possible, in-house sports therapist through Pinnacle Sports Massage, a treatment room where gym-goers can access red light treatments, theraguns and compression leg sleeves at an additional cost.

Each of the owners has had a background in different sports, ranging from powerlifting to American football, and boxing to Dean’s chosen sport, rugby.

“We wanted to try and create an atmosphere where athletes and people not only progress with their bodies but hopefully their future careers,” Dean added.

“There were things we didn’t have that I think would have helped us to the next stage of our athletic ability and maybe taken us further into professional contracts.”

The owners are particularly keen to give back to the community and will allow Veteran’s Army, Gatehouse and Women’s Aid to use their spin room for free.
