New plans to turn long-closed Stowmarket pub The Crown Inn into a convenience shop

Plans to turn a long-closed Stowmarket pub into a shop are under consideration.

The Crown Inn, in Crown Street, closed in November 2020 and, according to a planning statement submitted to Mid Suffolk District Council, ‘is not considered to be in a position where redeveloping the premises as a public house is likely to be a viable position’.

Instead, applicant Stephen Barrett has applied to change the building’s use from pub to convenience store, along with a small ground floor extension.

The planning statement added: “Looking around the area, it is considered that in retaining a community facility on the site, by re-developing the existing building as a convenience store, will be a viable proposition.

“This will create a welcome benefit for local residents, offering a service for general food and household supplies.”

Under the proposals, the pub’s entrance steps would be replaced with a ramp, while automatic doors would be installed.
