Bury St Edmunds on-street parking charges to increase from Monday

Increased parking charges will apply to on-street parking in Bury St Edmunds from next Monday.

West Suffolk Council is hiking pay and display fees in on-street locations across the town from November 22.

It says the increases would help to manage parking demand and capacity and to encourage the use of off-street car parks to reduce congestion and pollution in the town centre.

From Monday, it will cost £2 to park for 30 minutes on Angel Hill or on Cornhill/Buttermarket.

Previously, Angel Hill charges ranged from £1.50-£3.50. These will increase to £2-£4.

On Cornhill/Buttermarket charges will range from £2-£2.70 (previously £1.50-£2.20).

South town centre charges will range from £1.50-£4 (up from £1-£3.50), while in Springfield Road charges will range from £1 for 30 minutes (previously 80p) to £3.50 for up to two hours' parking.

A spokesman for West Suffolk Council said: “This is the first increase to on-street car parking charges in Bury since 2014. There are 344 on-street bays in the town and our strategy is to set them at a higher tariff to prevent the majority of motorists from driving around looking for spaces, which can cause increased congestion and pollution in our town centre.

"Instead, we encourage most of our town centre visitors who have travelled in by car to use our car parks. These offer more availability of spaces, with 3,760 parking bays in Bury, while our car park tariffs are also set at a cheaper rate than to on-street, where the driver will naturally pay extra for the convenience of being a bit closer to the shops and other businesses.”
