Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and Suffolk Police archive photos show officers and firefighters throughout last century
Emergency services in Suffolk have changed a lot over the years to adapt to the changing landscape of the county, and photos from throughout the last century show some of these differences.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service celebrates its 75th anniversary on April 1 this year, while Suffolk Constabulary as we now know it formed in 1967 following a merger of West Suffolk Constabulary, East Suffolk Constabulary and Ipswich Borough Police.
Here are some of the best archived images of Suffolk police officers and firefighters from across the last 100 years.
Many of these police images can be seen at the Suffolk Police Museum, which is based the Constabulary Headquarters at Martlesham Heath, near Ipswich.
Volunteers, including Eric Hopes who was awarded a British Empire Medal in this year's New Years Honours, support the museum hosting visitor groups and tours.
The older images include pictures from as long ago as 1895, as well as some from the 1960s which show the changing uniform in the force.
Changes have also been seen in the fire service, which was formed in 1948 as the Suffolk & Ipswich Fire Service, before changing to Suffolk Fire Service in 1974, and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service in 2004.
The earliest archived picture shows the then-Ipswich Fire Brigade from 1915, while more recent images show crews in the late 1990s.
The uniform, as well as the fire engines and appliances have changed dramatically in the service, with the old, iconic brass helmets shown in the first image.
These days, the service has a handful of whole-time stations including Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, as well as dozens of on-call stations across the county.
