Plans in for revamp of Pakenham Pavilion following demolition of ‘tired’ building
Plans have been submitted to revamp a village’s pavilion following the demolition of the existing ‘tired’ building.
The bid was put forward by Paul Harris, vice-chairman at Pakenham Village Hall and Playing Field Association, for the construction of a new pavilion in place of the existing building in Paccas Close.
Dating back to the early 1980s, the existing pavilion has, according to planning papers, ‘deteriorated significantly’ over the last five years.
The plans follow the opening of a new £90,000 children’s play area in October last year, which the planning statement said had been popular with residents.
The planning statement said: “Pakenham is a relatively small village with approximately 900 inhabitants, but is one with a large community spirit which galvanises when it comes to the support of local issues and events.
“Somewhat ironically, the appearance and popularity of the new play area has only served to exacerbate the comparatively tired appearance of the current pavilion.”
If approved, the plans would ensure the new pavilion would receive year-round use and be capable of accommodating events, clubs and small conferences, and help to encourage sports clubs back into the village.
The planning statement added: “Principally these proposals are intended to provide a vibrant community hub, that will benefit the residents of the village as well as the wider local community.
“It will prove to be an attractive addition to the village and give the recreation ground a real lift, suitably complementing the new play equipment which has proved so popular and add another attraction to the area which for too long has been underutilised.”
West Suffolk Council is now considering the application, with the decision deadline set for December 18.
