Plans submitted to Suffolk County Council to turn land at business site in Rougham, near Bury St Edmunds, into waste station

A business is looking to use land as a new waste transfer station.

Nigel Milsom, managing director at Cargate Engineering, has sought permission from Suffolk County Council to turn part of the Lower Gorse site, in Rougham, near Bury St Edmunds, into a waste transfer station.

These stations are where waste is consolidated from several sources before being transported for disposal.

Cargate Engineering, which offers wastewater management and drainage services, has operated from its Rougham site since 2022.

A statement submitted on behalf of Mr Milsom said the proposal would make use of existing industrial premises in a relatively isolated location and help reduce pressure to develop greenfield land.

It argues although there are homes within 200 metres of the site, these are separated by a dense woodland area serving as a visual and acoustic screen.

The business already has an Environment Agency (EA) waste carrier permit, legally required to transport waste in England.

Suffolk County Council planners are now considering the application.
