Suffolk Highways says ‘respect residents’ as A1088 Bridge Farm Bridge at Stowlangtoft, near Bury St Edmunds, closure takes step further with ‘no entry’ signs at Kiln Lane to stop drivers bypassing diversion route
Drivers bypassing the road closure for a bridge restoration project have been asked to ‘respect residents’ and follow the official diversion.
Suffolk Highways took to Facebook on Wednesday to announce it would install ‘no entry’ signage at the entry of Kiln Lane, at Stowlangtoft, to prevent people using it to get around the A1088 Bridge Farm Bridge closure.
It said nearby roads had experienced a ‘significant increase’ in traffic trying to circumvent the closure by using ‘unofficial and unsuitable’ diversion routes.
The signs will be installed on Monday and will be in place until the A1088 closure is lifted. The date for this is unknown, as the revised programme of the restoration works, in the wake of delays, has not yet been published.
In its post Highways said: “Please respect residents by adhering to this and in order to reduce the volume of traffic travelling along local roads, many of which are unsuitable for large volumes of traffic.
“We wish to remind all road users that the diversion route for the closure on the A1088 at Stowlangtoft is via A1088, A143, A134, A14, A1088 and vice versa.”
The signs will be at the northern entrance of Kiln Lane, at the junction with Walsham Road.
The works at Bridge Farm Bridge are due to restart on Monday after they were delayed due to defects found in concrete piles used in the construction.
SuffolkNews has approached Suffolk Highways about the revised programme for the works, but has not yet been provided with it.
