SuffolkNews Podcast: Liz Truss becomes shortest serving Prime Minister after resigning

Up first, Liz Truss becomes the shortest serving Prime Minister after resigning following a calamitous few weeks.

The MP for South West Norfolk including Thetford, was under pressure from almost her first day in office, 44 days ago.

Following a disastrous uncosted mini-budget which sent the pound plummeting and interest rates soaring, she also she sacked Chancellor and close friend Kwasi Kwarteng, replaced him with centrist Jeremy Hunt.

People in Haverhill took to social media this morning to warn of flooding after many areas of the town were affected by heavy rain.

Haverhill resident, Amber McGrath, said a road at the bottom of the recreation ground was flooded, as was Howe Road and other residents posted saying that the Tesco roundabout and library car park had been flooded earlier today as well.

Between 9.30am - 1pm today, a Met Office weather warning for rain and thunderstorms, was in place across the majority of Suffolk.

Also, the words 'disgusting’, ‘unfair’ and ‘terrible’, have been used to describe the stresses of trying - and failing - to be accepted as an NHS patient by a dentist in Haverhill.

The comments came from people waiting to be treated today by the charity Dentaid who visited Haverhill, with its mobile unit containing four volunteer dentists and three dental nurses.

The unit was parked next to St Mary’s Church, which opened its doors to allow those needing treatment to be assessed, with the free treatment only available to anyone not registered with a dentist and in dental pain.

And finally, a major supermarket chain is set to open its third store in a Suffolk town.

Ipswich Borough Council's Planning & Development Committee approved new plans to build a new Lidl superstore next to the leisure play area Jump In.

Work is expected to begin next year on the site of the former B&Q garden centre in Anglia Retail Park.
