Police crack down on rat-running in Kiln Lane amid A1088 Bridge Farm Bridge project in Stowlangtoft
Motorists are being warned by police to stop using a rural road as an unofficial detour to bypass ongoing roadworks.
The project to replace the A1088 Bridge Farm Bridge in Stowlangtoft is expected to conclude in 79 days after Suffolk Highways undertook the works to enhance the structure's longevity and improve safety for all motorists.
Since the project began on Monday, June 22, residents have expressed concerns over increased traffic and rat-running in Kiln Lane as drivers have been using the road to avoid the works despite it not being part of the official diversion route.
Residents in the area have said the high volume of traffic has damaged the grass verges on either side of the road and that the road itself is beginning to crumble away as existing potholes are growing in size.
With two months left before Highways is expected to complete the works on February 28 following delays, Stowmarket Police is warning motorists not to use the road as increased signage and more police presence has been introduced to deter drivers.
A police spokesperson said: “We are aware that the closure of the A1088 between Stowlangtoft and Ixworth is causing traffic to divert and the signs put in place are there to prevent a build up of traffic using these minor roads and to protect the verges.
“We are working with Highways and other partners and carrying out police checks in this area with numerous tickets being issued for vehicles disregarding the signage and speed.
“We will continue to patrol this area and enforce the traffic regulations and encourage drivers to use the official diversion route in place.”
Police are reminding motorists of the temporary 30mph speed limits which are in place on several of the routes in the area.
A detailed diversion route can be found here.
The project has also been linked to a decline in footfall for local businesses as many have reported significant negative impacts and expressing concerns for their future due to the roadworks.
