Catey Pre-school in Cockfield, near Bury St Edmunds, praised by Ofsted

A Suffolk pre-school has been described as good by Ofsted, having been told it required improvement last year.

Catey Pre-school in Church Lane, Cockfield – near Bury St Edmunds – did not have systems in place to make sure all the right checks could be done by Ofsted last year, leading inspectors to mark it down on ‘leadership and management’, despite having being rated good in every other category.

The school climbed from requiring improvement to good in a report published last Friday, as every category it was assessed on reached this strong standard – the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

Ofsted’s report said: “The manager has worked hard to make positive changes to the pre-school since the last inspection.

“For example, she has introduced new daily routines and has re-organised the learning environment to allow children more space to play.

“Children make firm friendships at this caring, nurturing pre-school.

“They explore the inviting learning opportunities with confidence and curiosity.

“Staff promote children's communication and language through regular song and story sessions.

“Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities receive good levels of care.”

Catey pre-school looks after around 24 children aged two to five. It was registered as a school in April 2012, and this year’s inspection took place on April 20.
