New wine shop Vino Gusto to open in Bury St Edmunds

A wine business which started online and operated out of a pub is opening a new standalone store in Bury St Edmunds.

Vino Gusto, part of the Gusto Pronto brand, which owns The One Bull in Bury and The Cadogan in Ingham, will welcome its first customers to 27 Hatter Street tomorrow.

It has been a three-way project between Roxane and David Marjoram, owners of Gusto Pronto, and Jake Bennett-Day, group beverage manager for the company.

Vino Gusto launched as an online shop in May 2020 to offer nationwide delivery of a portfolio of 200 varieties but the new shop in Hatter Street will offer a more immersive experience.

Customers will be able to take part in wine exams and courses upstairs with Master of Wine Nick Adams. Meanwhile, on the ground floor customers will be able to load credit on to cards from the shop and serve themselves from a selection of wines.

Roxane said: “The three of us are really excited about this. We have been talking about it for a long while and we are very much ready and we think it will bring something new to Bury.”

Vino Gusto will have over 500 wines on offer, including reds, whites and more.

She added: “It’s been a tough couple of years and it’s really nice that this feels like a really positive thing that’s come out of the difficult times.

“When we first opened back in May 2020 I felt as though we had a small piece of something positive amongst the chaos so it’s really nice to see it come into its own.

"We are really excited for people to come through the doors and find out more about what we are doing here."

There will be over 500 different wines on offer at Vino Gusto, some of which will be found in the downstairs 'cave' cellar.

Roxane said Jake would be 'taking the lead' with the shop and would be the main person customers will see when they go through the doors.

She added there would a be a 'friendly and relaxed' feel to the shop and wines on offer included whites, reds, fizz and more.

Jake said: “I’m really excited. It feels like a lot of hard work is about to pay off and it feels like for a project we started throughout lockdown, this is the most positive thing to have come out of the last two years.

“I’m just really excited to get the doors open and get some wine tasting going.”

Jake, who has managed pubs before and another wine shop just outside Cambridge, said the store would be opening from Wednesday to Sunday from 10.30am.

“I’ve got a few part time members of staff but for the time being we are running a skeleton staff,” he said, adding that number could increase depending on how busy the shop becomes.
