Pup Noah arrives in Bury St Edmunds after car journey from Turkey in bid to save injured leg

A pup has arrived in Bury St Edmunds for transformational surgery after a 2,500 mile car journey from Turkey in a mercy mission by a dog rescue charity.

Eight-month-old Noah arrived at the Downing Close home of Andy Gough, trustee and committee member with Animal Friends of Turkey (AFOT), on Friday, December 20 in a bid to save his leg.

The cross breed suffers from a deformed front leg after being hit by a car at the age of just 10 weeks.

Two vets in Turkey recommended amputation but AFOT refused to give up hope and embarked on a plan to help him.

Mr Gough took copies of Noah’s x-rays to vet Duncan Hole at Swayne & Partners and the charity needs to raise an initial £1,250 to help fund the cost of the surgery.

“It’s going to transform his life,” Mr Gough said. “He would have been a three-legged dog living on the street in Turkey.

“The survival rate wouldn’t have been particularly favourable.

“The main reason the charity was keen to help was that we knew his leg could be saved and it seemed wrong somehow to allow that to happen if there was a chance to give him a life that’s free of pain, healthy and on all four legs.”

On the fund-raising target, he added: “We’re about half way with that. There’s one lady who doesn’t live far from here who posted a cheque for £100 to the charity.

“There’s a school in Suffolk with a class of 12-year-olds who’ve decided they’re going to have a couple of days of fund-raising which should happen later in January/early February.”

He was due to take Noah to the vet on Monday to discuss the next steps.

Mr Gough, who rescued his cross-breed Dolly from Turkey a year ago, said: “He’s settling well. He’s a little confused but he’s a happy, gentle lad.”

He is a regular visitor to the Fethiye region of Turkey, and after seeing the plight of dogs there, he became involved with UK-registered AFOT, which relies solely on donations.
