STEM day at Great Whelnetham Church of England School, near Bury St Edmunds, inspires pupils

Primary school pupils have enjoyed a hands-on day learning about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The day at Great Whelnetham Church of England School, in Great Whelnetham, near Bury St Edmunds, began with an assembly to open students’ eyes to the subjects and career options.

The school was delighted to welcome critical care paramedic Jemma Varela – sister of head of school and science co-ordinator Bobby Varela – who shared her career experiences.

“This was so inspiring for the pupils,” said office manager Angela Kimber.

The rest of the afternoon was spent becoming computer programmers, making tornados in a jar, engineering wind-powered cars and more.

“It was lovely to hear parents' feedback that these exciting activities continued well into the evening at home!” said Mrs Kimber.

Parents were very much part of the whole experience as they joined them to participate in the various workshops.

“What an incredible day pupils at Great Whelnetham had in school recently to celebrate STEM!” added Mrs Kimber.
