We visited Quentin Blake’s The Illustrated Hospital exhibition at Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds
On a rare family trip into Bury St Edmunds we weaved through the market with its stalls, music and the smell of food cooking.
The four of us were on our way to see some of the work from an artist who is loved by all ages, Quentin Blake.
Moyse’s Hall Museum’s Illustrated Hospital exhibition, which is showing until October 6, showcases some interesting work from the artist famed for bringing to life Roald Dahl’s characters such as Charlie, Willy Wonka and Fantastic Mr Fox.
This exhibition, co-curated by the team of the artist and the West Suffolk Council-run museum, shows work Quentin has done for hospitals and healthcare settings, which has been a significant part of his pieces since 2005.
Coming into the start of the exhibition, its first room was a treat for readers of any age, showing some classic fiction, including Watership Down, Winnie The Pooh, Where the Wild Things Are and The Gruffalo.
Along with books there was also figurines, teddies and other objects associated with these wonderful page turners from the West Suffolk Council’s Heritage Collections.
Taking the stairs it was not long before you were hit by the unmistakable style of Quentin Blake.
Works that were created for the likes of St George’s Hospital in London and L’Hopital Armand Trousseau in Paris which just burst from the walls in a cascade of colour, brightness and fun that only Quentin Blake images can give.
My family were big fans of the green dragon pictures for St George’s and with an interactive screens, one of which had footage of the man himself talking about his work, it was truly immersive experience of one of greatest illustrators of our time and I would totally recommend this to anyone.
Quentin Blake: The Illustrated Hospital is on at Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds until October 6.
