Re-use project with a shop in Bury St Edmunds appeals for quality donations

A re-use project is urgently appealing for donations.

The FCC Environment Project says that since its shops have re-opened, there has been a significant drop in the number of ‘quality donations’.

The organisation, which has 11 shops across Suffolk, works in partnership with Suffolk County Council and The Benjamin Foundation, which supports people in areas such as homelessness, emotional wellbeing and independence.

Measures are also in place to ensure the safety of customers at its shop at Bury St Edmunds Recycling Centre, on Fornham Road, including limitations on the number of people in the shop, two-metre distancing, a one way system and hand sanitisers.

Appointments must be booked at suffolk.gov.uk/recyclingcentres to drop off items for re-use and recycling.

The re-use shops aim to reduce waste and increase recycling in Suffolk as well as raising funds for local charities.

Rory Brien, general manager of materials trading at FCC Environment, said: “We were delighted to be able to re-open both shops to the public and residents are indeed coming back in to the shops to bag a bargain but we have seen a real drop in the volume of good quality items which we can make available in the shops.

“How residents donate has changed due to Covid of course, for example, people need to book a slot to visit the Recycling Centre and we can’t aid with unloading of cars for the safety of the public and of our staff.

"In addition, donations can’t be made directly to the two shops but there is a clearly marked re-use area at all of our 11 recycling centers across Suffolk where pre-loved items can be left and we promise they will be given a good new home, and will contribute towards providing vitals services within Suffolk.”
