World Environment Day: May was most profitable month yet for West Suffolk Council solar farm in Lakenheath

West Suffolk Council has recorded its best return yet on its £14.5million solar farm in Lakenheath.

The authority said the Toggam Farm facility produced 2,007MWh in May - with sunny weather helping up to 65 per cent of the nation's power supply come from renewable sources.

West Suffolk has stated the farm is an investment in both green energy and a sustainable boost for their finances. A record £411,000 of income was taken in May.

Council Leader John Griffiths said: “Our environment is crucially important to us all both now and in the future.

"While many of us have been working from home, our work to deliver on carbon savings, cut pollution, and generate income to pay for day to day services for residents and businesses, is ongoing.

“In addition to our solar and ground source heating initiatives, we continue to monitor and take action on pockets of air pollution, as we have done recently in Great Barton in partnership with the county council, through the movement of a pedestrian crossing. Other partnership work including improving electric vehicle infrastructure and reducing anti-idling had already begun prior to the lockdown restrictions."

The council announced the latest on Friday which was World Environment Day. Councillor Griffiths added: “Friends of the Earth, named west Suffolk as one of the top areas for tackling climate change and supporting the environment. Of course there is more to be done which is why recognising and celebrating World Environment Day is so important.”
