Bury St Edmunds Nostalgia - James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan films scenes at Lakenheath and Mildenhall air bases

In today's nostalgia we travel back to 1997 when Pierce Brosnan visited a town to film scenes for the latest Bond movie.

Bury Free Press reporter Sue Warren had the pleasure of interviewing the Bond actor who was shooting scenes for the 18th Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, at Lakenheath and Mildenhall air bases.

He was staying at the Angel Hotel in Bury Edmunds.

In the film, Bond steals a piece of computer software and flies to US airbase in Okinawa - Mildenhall and Lakenheath cleverly disguised - and meets a scientist who holds the key to finding a British warship.

He said: "The Americans were very pleased to have us there and they treated us with the utmost civility. Movie-making is an activity which most people don’t get to see."

Brosnan even popped out for a trip in Bury, visiting Chicago Rock Café for a pint of lager.

Club manager, Bernie Mossetto, couldn't believe the 007 actor was in her club in a small country town like Bury. When Bernie got a telephone call from Brosnan's personal assistant asking whether he could book a table, she thought someone was pulling her leg.

"I said I would wait for him by the door and when he arrived everyone's faces dropped. There was a lot women with shaking knees," she said.

A helicopter crew from the 352nd Special Operations Group, the equivalent of the British SAS, from USAF, would feature in the film as well as more than 50 Air Force personnel and security police who were hired as extras.
