Bury St Edmunds Nostalgia - St Edmundsbury Primary School pupils transported to bygone era

In 1997 pupils at a Bury St Edmunds school sampled pre-war education – and liked much of what they saw.

St Edmundsbury Primary School staged a 1930s day as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

Staff and children dressed in period outfits and classroom scenes from yesteryear were re-created as the clocks in the Grove Road school were turned back 60 years. Some former pupils were also invited.

Headteacher Neville Hodson said the day went ‘exceedingly well’ but that pupils did not take to all the teaching methods from the bygone era.

He said: “They weren’t so keen on the strictness.”
