Bury St Edmunds residents in shock following fatal stabbing at Harland Court
Residents in Bury St Edmunds have shared their shock after a man was fatally stabbed in the town.
Police were called at 3pm yesterday by a member of the public who believed there had been a stabbing in the car park at Harland Court, close to Bury train station on Station Hill.
Officers arrived and found a man and a woman in a flat who had both suffered stab wounds.
The man, in his 40s, was declared dead shortly after officers arrived and the woman, also in her 40s, was taken to hospital where as of last night she was in a critical but stable condition.
At just after 3.30pm yesterday, a 38-year-old man from Bury was detained by officers in the St John’s Street area in connection with the incident and arrested on suspicion of murder before being taken in for questioning.
Today, a police cordon at Harland Court remained in place and nearby residents have shared their shock following the incident.
One resident, who lives in Out Northgate but did not want to be named, said it had left her scared.
"I feel scared because it happened and it's so rare around these parts."
She added when she first heard about what had happened her first emotion was disbelief.
"I thought, 'this is such a quiet town', and the street we live on, nothing really happens.
"And being in this town I feel quite safe that I can just go about my day and not worry."
John Sanderson, a resident who lives in Ipswich Street near Harland Court, said he was thinking about those harmed during the incident.
"Bury is a, comparatively, peaceful place, with nice people.
"And we get on great with all the neighbours.
"So yes, it is disturbing and you've got to feel for the people who are affected by it."
However, despite the incident happening so close, Mr Sanderson said he did not feel less safe after the incident.
Colin Fordham, another Ipswich Street resident, felt the same and said he was not shocked, as it was not the first incident of this type on Station Hill.
Jennifer Starke, who lives in Ipswich Street, said she found out about the stabbing after looking on Facebook.
"It was kind of scary," she said.
"Something happening that close to home."
