Rolling back the years to a 1987 charity barrel push from Greene King, in Bury St Edmunds, to The Artilleryman pub, in Colchester

Today we are rolling back to August 1987, when this ‘motley crew’, together with Roman guard, were pictured at the start of a 40-mile charity barrel push.

About 40 walkers completed the journey from the Greene King brewery, in Bury St Edmunds, to the Artilleryman pub, in Colchester, where they are regular customers.

It was the fourth sponsored barrel push organised by the Colchester pub and it raised £947.50 for Cancer Research during a bucket collection en route.

The Roman soldiers were members of the Balkerne Gate Guard – a Colchester-based group which keeps alive the Roman historic tradition.
