Roy sets out bold plans for Thetford
The new mayor of Thetford is planning big things for the town after he put on the robes at the town's mayor making ceremony.
Roy Brame wants to help promote the town to the region as much as he can but his main focus during his year wearing the chain is a little closer to home.
He said: “If I can get a factory to come here, lovely, that means more jobs but getting the community together is my biggest plan.
“I am starting a mayoral project with the youth of the town, I want to get youth groups together and help people in the town who are less fortunate, whether it is toy collections or visiting local elderly people for a cup of tea and a chat.”
The mayor seems to be a popular choice for Thetfordians as the ceremony on May 18 showed with its large turnout. Roy said he was over the moon about it, if a little embarrassed.
He said: “That was fantastic, the amount of public support I had was great.We didn’t expect so many and I must personally apologise to the people that had to be turned away. Some of my personal guests didn’t even get in – that just shows how many people went.”
The plans for the coming year include reopening the old swimming pool near the Nun’s Bridges, trying to put together celebrations for Norfolk Day, decorating the exterior of the Carnegie Room for its 50th anniversary and the plans do not stop there from the mayor.
He said: “The biggest thing I want to show people is that I am not worried about failure, I worked out if I try 50 daft ideas during my time and say only four come off then I am a winner and so is the town.”
One of his fund-raising ideas will take place at King’s Garden, as part of Thetford Open Gardens on July 1.
The mayor will officially opening the Gardens for the event and host a heads or tails challenge with around 500 people competing to win £350 of kitchen appliances from his business, Cobra Domestic Appliances, with all the proceeds going to St Nicholas Hospice Care.
The mayor’s wife, Karen, also wants to restart the Mayoress’ afternoon tea at the Guildhall to maybe help lonely people of the town socialise.
Roy knows he has big plans but said: “If I can finish the year, look back and see I have pleased some people with someone saying I was always there for the town during my time, then I will be happy.”
