HRH Duke of Gloucester unveils plaque at extended and refurbished properties managed by Guildhall Feoffees




Refurbished and enlarged almshouses in Bury St Edmunds have been officially unveiled by royalty.

HRH the Duke of Gloucester, a trained architect, visited the homes at Long Row, Southgate Street, to meet residents, trustees and see inside one of the properties.

Irene Pettitt, who has lived at Long Row for five years, led the tour of the alterations, which saw five homes extended and remodelled to provide separate sleeping accommodation and kitchen and sitting areas. The properties were built in 1804.

Ollie Peacock, chairman of the Guildhall Feoffees, which maintains 37 homes, said: “This is just the start of our plan to upgrade all our living accommodation, bringing it up to 21st century standards while maintaining the unique charm of the ancient foundation.”

Other guests included the mayor of St Edmundsbury, the chief executive of Suffolk County Council and representatives of the Almshouses Association.
