All Over Beauty in Bury St Edmunds celebrates 35th anniversary
Monday saw the Government’s next step in the roadmap out of lockdown come to fruition, but one Bury St Edmunds beauty salon had extra cause for celebration.
All Over Beauty, in West Road, reached its 35th anniversary, and owner Susan Over was surprised by staff with balloons, flowers and a Bury Free Press photographer who took some snaps upon re-opening.
Susan, who first started out in the industry at just 20, said she was not expecting anything at all.
“I was more than surprised,” the 55-year-old said.
“I wasn’t expecting it. I just mentioned it (the anniversary) because of dates and the staff thought they would organise something.
“One of the receptionists organised it.”
Susan knew from a young age she wanted to go into health and beauty, studying human biology at college before opening her own salon after a bank gave her a small loan.
She has been based at various locations across Bury St Edmunds, but located solely at West Road since 2008.
When asked how she had reached the 35-year milestone, Susan said: “God knows. Determination, because obviously I have had two recessions along the way, so you have to pick yourself up and adapt.”
Susan added that when she first started out, she only had a few pieces of equipment that cost around £1,000.
Now some pieces can cost 40 times that.
“Things are changing now," she said.
"I have got several bits of equipment and it is a totally different ball game.”
Susan said some of her best memories were of the staff she had worked with over the years, and the customers, some of whom had been with her from the start.
“I have got clients that have been with me for 35 years and staff who have been here for 20,” she said.
“So it’s been the staff and clients.”
“Things are always changing and that keeps it interesting,” she added.
Susan said the salon is booked out for the next couple of weeks and chats with customers so far had been ‘amazing’.
