Business owners at Thurston Granary rush to help woman trapped under car

Shopkeepers rushed to help a woman who was trapped under her car in Thurston on Friday.

The incident happened at the Station Hill car park, near the Co-op and hairdressers, shortly after 1pm. It is believed the car rolled on a hill after the hand brake was left off.

The owner of Trawler's Catch fish and chip shop described feeling 'helpless' after going to her assistance and said despite attempts to jack up the car they had been unable to help the woman or free her leg.

"I just did what anybody else would do," he said. "I have since spoken to the lady's daughter as she called the next day to say thank you. I'm just glad her leg was saved."

He said the woman was in a lot of pain and had been trapped for 'a long time' before rescue services were able to release her.

"I didn't do much, the hairdressers helped the most. I was just there and did what I could. Everyone around was trying to help and comfort her," he added.

The woman's daughter launched a Facebook search on Saturday to find those involved before the emergency services arrived so she could thank them personally for their help.

The appeal was shared widely and as a result she was put in contact with many of them.

Suffolk Police, the fire service, East Anglian Ambulance Trust and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended the scene.

The East of England Ambulance Service said an ambulance, ambulance officer and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the junction of Station Hill and Laurel Close at 1.03pm to reports of a patient trapped under a car.

A spokeswoman for the air ambulance, which landed on nearby New Green, said their crew was tasked with assisting the other emergency services.

"Teams worked together on scene to optimise patient outcome," she added.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called at 1.14pm, with crews from Bury St Edmunds and Elmswell on site until 1.50pm.

Suffolk Police said officers were called shortly before 1.15pm on Friday to reports a woman was trapped under a car. The fire service and air ambulance were already at the scene when they arrived.

The woman was taken to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury, for treatment to leg injuries.
