Signal problem in Bury St Edmunds is ‘outrageous’

Customers of mobile phone company Three say they are getting increasingly frustrated by having little or no signal in an area of Bury St Edmunds which has been plagued by ‘network problems’ since last year.

Andy Conroy, one of a group of people affected on Bury’s Horringer Court estate, said he switched to Three last autumn because it claimed to have the ‘most reliable network’.

As a self-employed window cleaner and charity administrator he relies on his mobile.

But he says he has been getting ‘almost no service’ at home unless he holds his phone close to his rear bedroom window, from which he can see the Three mobile phone mast on top of the water tower in West Road.

“Currently, I am stuck at home with a broken leg in a plaster cast, so hopping up the stairs on crutches just to use the phone is a real nuisance and we seem to be getting nowhere,” he said.

Irate Three customers have taken to the Horringer Court Residents’ Association’s Facebook page to complain.

Sue Frost said she was getting ‘no signal at all’ and having to use WiFi, while Rachel Berry said her previous five bars of signal strength were ‘non-existent’ and Three ‘seem to refuse to acknowledge there is an issue’.

Johnny Symonds said: “Still 0-1 bar for me. Can’t make a call as even if it starts it will drop out.”

Cllr Sarah Stamp, who represents the Hardwick division on Suffolk County Council, called the situation ‘outrageous’ and said she planned to take the matter up with Ofcom and Trading Standards.

A spokeswoman for Three said some sites in the area were undergoing engineering works in order to provide customers with 4G.

She said: “We are committed to providing our customers with a great network experience. We’re investigating and will resolve as soon as possible.

“We apologise for the inconvenience experienced by customers who have been without signal since last year.

“We advise these customers to contact our centre on 0800 358 8460.”
