Some of Bury St Edmunds, Hartest and Ickworth celebrations for King Charles III Coronation we know so far




The Coronation of King Charles III on May 6 will be an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate a national occasion once again.

In Bury St Edmunds and surrounding villages, venues and community groups will be organising activities and events over the next few weeks.

Giffords Hall Vineyard in Hartest is hosting a special Coronation Grand Tour including a free toast to King Charles lll on Monday, May 1.

During the one hour tour, guides will talk through the grape varieties, pruning and trellising techniques along with a visit to the winery and barrel hall.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral is hosting a colourful exhibition of English royal heraldry from May 2 to May 16. The cathedral is open from 10am until 4pm, entry is free but donations are gratefully received.

There will be a community gathering at Abbeygate Cinema on May 6 from 10am to 1pm.

The Coronation will be screened live on the built-in 4K TV in the cinema’s new function space.

At the Priory Hotel, there is a Royal-Tea Garden Party from 12pm until 3pm on the same day. Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for children aged 3-12 years and under 3s go free.

Also on the Saturday, Bury St Edmunds Constitutional Club is holding a Coronation Party from 2pm to 6pm.

In the afternoon, entertainment includes garden games and a special performance by singer Ashlea Lauren, as well as a barbecue.

Also, the Ickworth Hotel is hosting a fun-filled family garden party from 5pm to 8pm.

The Bury St Edmunds Round Table has organised a free to attend ‘King’s Coronation Celebration’ on Sunday, May 7 in the Abbey Gardens.

Open from 2pm, families can bring their own picnics and there will also be food stands and fair rides. From 8.30pm to 10pm, the Coronation concert will be screened on a cinema-style TV.

Southgate Community Centre, Southgate Church and Hardwick Primary School have planned a celebratory party on the playing field at the school.

Its May Bank Holiday Fun Day will now be held on May 8 from 11am until 4pm. There will be an inter-school football tournament, free bouncy castles, obstacle courses and slides, as well as Southgate Church puppets, activities and refreshments.

National Trust Ickworth is displaying the Coronation robes worn by Theodora, 4th Marchioness of Bristol in the Rotunda until 8 May, 11am to 3pm.

Only seen a handful of times before, these robes are usually carefully packed away in storage but are now shown in all their regal glory along with other artefacts she kept from each day.

The Bury Back Choir will be performing Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Haydn’s Nelson Mass on May 20 from 7.30pm to 9.45pm in St Edmundsbury Cathedral in honour of the new King.

The Royal Anglian Band is hosting a Grand Coronation Charity Concert at St Mary's Church in Bury on May 27 from 1pm to 3.30pm.
