Thurston student union helps homeless

A sixth form students’ union decided to host an event to help homeless people.

The president of Thurston Sixth Form’s student union, Nils Carter De Jong, got in touch with Sunday Suppers in Bury St Edmunds after collecting clothes and winter coats.

Beth Lebbon, Year 13 tutor at the school, approached Nils with the idea of donating winter coats as she was moving house.

The idea took off with the whole sixth form community getting involved donating clothes and food.

“There was about 15 bin bags full of clothes and we had about two or three trays of food and drinks,” Nils said.

“Sunday Suppers were really positive and really appreciative that we were doing this. They run entirely on donations. I am over the moon about it.

“I said in a meeting I didn’t expect many people to donate anything - I said I would have been happy with 20 coats, but then we kept getting more and more.”
