Construction students at the Milburn campus at West Suffolk College have been racking up a series of competition wins.

Second year apprentice John Moore from Thetford took top prize in the Guild of Bricklayers competition in the East, building a complex decorative model in six hours. He now goes forward to the national finals at the end of this month.

John works for NAP Anglia in Diss and was recently voted Brickwork Apprentice of the year by the National Federation of Builders Suffolk joint consultative committee.

Joe Ward from Stowmarket won first prize for his wooden step ladder in the Guild of Joiners and Ceilers contest. he works for Murdoch Joinery in Stowmarket while Alex Howe from Thetford took third place. He works for Dent and Vaughan in Brandon. The two were tasked to build a small timber step ladder from hardwood. Joe wins £1,000.

Plumber Scott Baldwin came second in the regional Skill and Build competition and is set to gain a place in the finals.

Meanwhile at the recent Suffolk Show Milburn students came first in the painting and decorating competition, second in carpentry and second in brickwork.

College programme manager, construction and building services, Tim Warnock, said: “It’s great to see our apprentices being recognised in this way. It shows the high level of teaching and learning taking place at West Suffolk College and emphasises the great links we have with excellent employers in the region.”
