Judge Geoirgina Hayden picked up the trophy on Nicola's behalf after she could not attend the ceremony at The Royal Exchange in the City of London.

"I am particularly proud that the Fortnum and Mason Cookery Writer of the Year award has been given for my work in a local newspaper because I'm a lifelong reader of the Bury and Suffolk Free Press," Nicola said earlier today.

"I never imagined my words would appear in them.

"To be honest I am a bit stunned and incredibly moved by the support and congratulations from food industry people I have looked up to for years."

The winners at last night's ceremony were selected by an independent, expert panel of judges comprising some of the most talented figures in the business including Alice Lascelles, Freddy Bulmer, Georgina Hayden, Jaega Wise, Mark Diacono and Tara Wigley.

The awards were co-presented by Claudia Winkleman alongside celebrated chef and judging panel chair, Angela Hartnett OBE.
