Suspected cause of fire at Culford School near Bury St Edmunds revealed




The fire service has revealed the suspected cause of a blaze which engulfed part of a school site.

Twelve crews from Woodbridge, Sudbury, Haverhill, Wickhambrook, Elmswell, Ixworth, Brandon, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Long Melford and Bury St Edmunds attended the fire at Culford School which was thought to be accidental.

Firefighters received the call at 11.08pm on Saturday night and battled the flames into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fire engulfed a single storey building and a waste compactor.

Investigations are ongoing.

A Culford School spokesperson said they would be open as usual today and praised the actions of the firefighters.

“Fortunately, the incident did not occur near to any of the boarding houses or main school buildings and the only disruption to pupils was being woken by the alarms,” they said.

“The school extends its gratitude to resident staff who were out in force ensuring the safety and wellbeing of pupils and to Suffolk Fire and Rescue for their swift response and efforts to manage the situation.”

The fire was dealt with by 4.55am.
