Save money on a family trip to the cinema in Suffolk

With colder weather on the horizon, a family trip to the cinema can sometimes be a welcome escape from the elements.

However, it can also be costly. The cost of tickets can be just the start, with the temptations of sweets, fizzy drinks, popcorns and nachos all lined up in the foyer.

So we've done a bit of research to find out how you can save some pounds on a family outing to the movies at some of the region's cinemas.

Abbeygate Cinema, Bury St Edmunds

At the Abbeygate, family matinées are screened every Saturday at 10.30am, with tickets costing £2.50 each (adults only admitted if accompanying children).

Standard tickets cost £9.50 adults before 5pm and £12 after, £6.50 children, family tickets (minimum of four people including two children) £6.50 per person before 5pm and £7.50 after, while members receive a discount.

Cineworld, Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and Ipswich

The Cineworld chain is another to offer bargain screenings at weekends, with its regular 'Movies for Juniors'.

Family films are available, with all tickets costing £2.50 (adults must be accompanied by children).

For standard screenings, family tickets are available where adults pay kids' prices (valid for groups of up to four with two adults).

And when it comes to snacks, munchboxes including a drink, popcorn and snack are available for £3.25 to movies for juniors ticket-holders (£3.90 at all other times).

Standard tickets prices are £9.99 adults, £5.99 children and £23.96 (family ticket).

The newly-refurbished and extended Regal [prides itself on being family-friendly and offers 'pocket money movies' on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The pocket money screenings feature family favourite films – for example, during October half-term it is showing the Space Jam: A New Lagacy – with tickets costing just £3 each and include free admission for one accompanying adult. All tickets for standard film showings cost £6.50 each.

Discounted family tickets (for two adults and two children or one adults and three children) are available on all film screenings after 6pm, while children under the age of three are free if seated on a parent or guardian’s lap. Booster seats are available free.

The foyer also offers a kids' combo deal with small fizzy drink and a small popcorn for £3, while children's lunchboxes (a sandwich, fruit, drink and popcorn) are available from the café bar for £5.

The Light, Thetford

Thetford's The Light offers family special showings of children's films on Saturdays and Sundays, when tickets cost £3.75 (or £5.75 for new releases). Family specials showings are also held Monday to Friday throughout school holidays and on bank holidays.

The family specials are a significant saving on standard online adult ticket prices, which cost £11.95, and online child tickets at £8.95.

If none of the family special showings tickle your fancy, you can buy a money-saving online family ticket for £35.80.

The Empire, Ipswich

The Empire offers 'Empire Juniors' showings every weekend, with ticket prices starting from £1.50.

All adults must be accompanied by a child, while children aged 10 and under must have an adult with them during the film.

Standard ticket prices are £6.99 for adults Monday to Thursday (£8.49 Friday, Saturday and Sunday), £5.49 children and £21.96 for a family ticket.

Ticket cost (two adults and two children): £6

Palace Cinema, Felixstowe

At Felixtowe's Palace Cinema it is slightly cheaper to visit in the afternoon than for evening showings.

Adults pay £7.95 for afternoon tickets (compared to £8.95 in the evening) and children and seniors £7.45 in the afternoon (£7.95 evening). On Mondays, all tickets cost £7.45.

Palace Cinema members – apply at the cinema – save £1 off regular ticket prices.

However, it is possible to save even more with a family ticket (two adults and two children or one adult and three children) costing £24.80 for afternoon showings and £27.80 for evening films. If your child is three or under tickets are free.

But to get the best deal, become a Palace Cinema and go to see a morning show at 10am-11am, when members pay £5 (non-members £7.45).

East Coast Cinema, Lowestoft

Lowestoft's East Coast Cinema offers some great money-saving family deals.

Standard tickets for under 18s cost £5.90 (adults £6.90), while a family-of-four ticket costs £21, the cheapest price we found for a family ticket (two adults and two children or one adult and three children).

Meanwhile, tickets for off-peak showings (Monday to Friday, films starting before 6.05pm, not available school or bank holidays) cost £4.50, with kids club movies (on Saturdays and Sundays) priced at £1.49 (£2.49 for holiday kids club).

The Riverside, Woodbridge

The Riverside is another cinema to offer a kids' club, with all tickets for selected showings of U or PG films costing £3 each (under threes not needing a seat are free, adults are only admitted if accompanied by a child).

A kids' combo snack pack including drink and small popcorn is available for £3, while a loyalty card offers every sixth kids' club visit free.

Standard prices are £9 for adults, £6 children (15 and under) and £25 for a family ticket.

At Leiston's cinema, standard tickets cost £8.50 for adults and £5.50 for children, making it £28 for a family of four (two adults and two children).
