A popular Bury St Edmunds pub has announced it has shut its doors permanently, with residents sharing their shock at the sudden closure.

As of Wednesday, all social media pages associated with The Tavern on St John's have closed, while a sign on the front door has announced that the pub is no longer serving the public.

The sign, seen by Suffolk News, says: "We regret to tell you that The Tavern is now permanently closed. Thanks for everything."

While no official reason for the closure was given, the premises are currently being marketed for sale.

Residents expressed their shock and disappointment at the news on social media, with some, who had spent time there in recent days, saying there had been no signs of the imminent closure.
