Thetford Foodbank has thanked residents after an urgent plea to help restock was answered.

After releasing pictures of empty shelves and pallets on social media from the bank’s Charles Burrell Centre site, in Staniforth Road, and asking for supplies such as tinned fish and rice pudding, biscuits, UHT milk and long life juice, donations came flooding in.

Steph Williams, of the foodbank, said: “The response from the community has been wonderful and we are very grateful. A big thank you for everyone’s support recently and their continued support for the foodbank.”

Places including Thetford Grammar School quickly got food together and volunteers from the foodbank collected from shoppers at the town’s Tesco, which along with a donation point in store, totalled more than 930kg of food.

All the food collected and what the bank had already should last around two months, with demand being around 1.8 tonnes a month.

Ali James, the manager of the foodbank, said: “Since April this year, families needing our help has doubled compared to that of the same period last year, we have provided food for 120 families compared to 65 in the same period last year.

“Demand is high and with the summer holidays this is going to increase, so please keep donating.”

This was also the message from the Gatehouse Foodbank, in Bury St Edmunds,

Amanda Bloomfield, chief executive of Gatehouse, said: “We are experiencing exactly the same thing. Over the last couple of weeks we have given out between 35 and 40 parcels, compared to this time last year which was 15. We are always really grateful for everybody’s help, our stocks are also low for this time of year as well, so any donations of tins and dried food would be gratefully received.”
