Staff from Norton CEVC Primary School, near Bury St Edmunds, complete Macmillan Cancer Support’s Norfolk Coast Mighty Hike

A group of staff from a village school took on a coastal half-marathon hike for charity – and have smashed their fundraising target.

The team from Norton CEVC Primary School, called the Norton Bold Adventurers, completed the Norfolk Coast Mighty Hike on Sunday to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

To support the team, Norton Primary School, near Bury St Edmunds, held a ‘Green Day’ on Friday, May 9, where pupils wore green – Macmillan’s colour – and generously donated to the cause.

This will tip the balance of the amount raised to over £8,000, which was ‘an amazing achievement’, the school said. The Norton Bold Adventurers had pledged to raise £1,000.

Organisers Louise Palmer and Fran, both of whom have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, have experienced first-hand the invaluable support offered by Macmillan.

They were joined by 13 fellow staff members on the hike, which started in Cromer, to step up to give back to the charity that helped them during difficult times.

Headteacher Lisa Sparkes said: “As a school and community, we’ve sadly seen the impact a cancer diagnosis can have on individuals and their families. This hike is our way of showing support and making a difference.”

Looking ahead, the School Council is also organising a whole-school fun hike on Friday, June 13, later on in the term.

The school said every step taken by the Norton Bold Adventurers was a stride towards supporting those affected by cancer – and the school community, friends and family are right behind them.
