Tai Woffinden, three-time world speedway champion, visits The Hunter Club, in St Andrews Street South, Bury St Edmunds, to share his story

A three-time speedway world champion packed out a Bury St Edmunds bar in an intimate event on Sunday.

Tai Woffinden, alongside manager Peter Adams and compere Ryan Guest, sold out The Hunter Club, in St Andrews Street South, with his legions of fans travelling from as far as Kent to hear his story.

The Scunthorpe-born, Australian-raised biker, who has raced all over the world, had the chance to show a different side to himself away from the high-octane nature of the track.

He said: “It was a really good event, I really enjoy doing these nights.

“It’s something very different to what I’m used to with the high adrenaline nature of the circuit; it’s nice to give something back to the people that support me, give them the full story.

“We went over things that haven’t been spoken about before – some fun things, some sad things – and they get to see a different side of me. Everyone sees the fast paced TV interviews and not much of who I am as a person.”

Tai was somewhat unsure of what the reception would be given an incident at an event in Ipswich last year, however he said the reception was incredible at The Hunter Club.

He was also surprised with the turnout, given Bury does not have a speedway team itself, although there are the nearby hubs of Ipswich and Mildenhall. “It was good, people travelling to see me. It was a sold out event, so I definitely can’t complain,” he said. Tai began his career in junior speedway in Perth in 2006 before then racing in Britain for the first time for Scunthorpe.

Across his career he has also represented Poole, Wolverhamption and most recently Sheffield. Tai has also raced for teams in Poland, Sweden and Denmark. Individually, he has won three world championships, the most recent of which was in 2018. He came runner up in the 2020 Speedway Grand Prix.
