New sign for Tayfen Road flats development dominates Bury St Edmunds skyline

Anyone who has lost their way in Bury St Edmunds can now get their bearings from a huge ‘TAYFEN’ sign painted on a block of flats currently under construction.

Residents are unhappy about the latest addition to the Tayfen Road flats, which has been compared to a ‘prison block’ by some on social media, while the TAYFEN painting has been likened to the Hollywood sign by some.

Social media users described it as ‘vile’ and an ‘eyesore’. But some approved, saying the sign gives the area character and Bury needs updating.

However, while the Hollywood sign is viewed as a cultural landmark, members of the public have been less impressed by the Bury equivalent. Martyn Taylor, chairman of the Bury Society, said: “Although the signage was shown on the approved plans, it simply reflected the grossness of the overall building.

“When the application was first submitted we said it represented over-development, the building was too tall and too close to the road.”

Approval for the building was granted at planning appeal.
