Tom Hanks’ Saving Private Ryan costume to feature at Bury St Edmunds’ Sci-Fi and Action Exhibition at Moyse’s Hall

A council has announced a costume worn by Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan as a late addition to its sci-fi exhibition.

West Suffolk Council, in partnership with Kudos Memorabilia, revealed today Captain Miller’s screen-used 2nd Ranger Battalion costume will go on display at the Sci-Fi and Action fair at Moyse’s Hall, in Bury St Edmunds, from Saturday.

The outfit, which was handmade for the two-time Oscar winner to use in the Spielberg-directed World War Two film, includes a combat jacket with built-in pockets and a Rangers patch, as well as a vest and trousers labelled ‘Miller’.

The costume exhibits production wear, including grime build up, thread pulls and discoloured areas.

Stephen Rivers, director of Kudos Memorabilia, said: “It is a pleasure to be working, once again, with our friends at Moyse’s Hall.

“Given the museum’s passion for epic war films, we are delighted to share this iconic Captain Miller costume from our collection - one of our all-time favourites - with visitors to this year’s annual Sci-Fi and Action Exhibition.”

Saving Private Ryan is renowned for its authenticity and for revolutionising the war cinema genre.

It picked up five Oscars of its own.

Ian Shipp, cabinet member for leisure at West Suffolk Council, said: "Kudos Memorabilia have been a huge support to West Suffolk Council’s Moyse’s Hall Museum over the years, lending multiple iconic props and costumes worn in some of the biggest movies of all time.

“It is with thanks to them that as of Saturday we can share this incredible uniform from one of Hollywood’s most humbling of blockbusters.”

The exhibition is on now and runs until February 2.
