Procopio’s Pantry, in Langton Place, Bury St Edmunds, receives Great Taste one star award for its cheese scones
A town café which recently celebrated its third birthday has won a prestigious industry award for its cheese scones.
Procopio’s Pantry, in Langton Place, Bury St Edmunds, received a Great Taste one star from the Guild of Fine Food for its ‘cheese scone with a hint of chilli’ bakes.
The recognition means the venue will always be able to attach the grading to its products and will be listed in the guild’s directory.
Owner Peter Procopio, 37, of Mildenhall, started the café with his sister after recognising Bury as a good place for the industry.
He said: “We work very hard at it – I’ve probably sold three or four thousand of these scones in the three years since we opened.
“I’ve changed the recipe a few times to get to where we want to and we make them fresh every day, so it’s a lot of work.
“The amount of people who come in here and say ‘that’s the best cheese scone I’ve ever tried’, now I can say it’s a recognised award-winning scone.”
It was the second time of asking for Peter, who entered his scones last year as ‘cheese and chilli scones’, but did not scoop the award as the guild said they were not spicy enough.
He hopes the Great Taste award will give his café more exposure and bring in customers who look for good scones.
Peter said the warmth of the chilli brings through the cheesiness of the bake and enhances its flavour.
Procopio’s serves a range of products and has a different ‘scone of the week’ every seven days.
It is open from 9.30am to 3pm on Wednesday to Friday and Sunday, and 9.30am to 4pm on Saturdays.
