Bury St Edmunds Risbygate Street partially closed for repairs to water main and potholes
A town centre road has been closed after water started seeping through the surface and two potholes appeared.
A section of Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, was closed yesterday for repairs to a water main and road surface, which had been causing nearby businesses concern.
Traffic lights are in place.
Calvin Watson who is building a café on the street said he first noticed water seeping through the road in August.
But he said the problem had got ‘much worse’ from Monday February 5, with two potholes also appearing in the road, which reached two foot wide by the end of the week.
He said water was travelling down the road at up to 50 litres a minute for around 100 feet, until it reached a drain.
Cars and lorries passing through the potholes were also kicking up broken road surface onto the pavement, which Mr Watson felt had become dangerous.
A spokesperson for Anglian Water said last night: “We are sorry for any traffic disruption on Risbygate Street in Bury St Edmunds.
“We have needed to close the road to enable us to repair a leak in the area.
“Our teams on site will be working to complete the job and reopen the road as normal as soon as they possibly can.
“We are grateful to customers and road users for their patience while we carry out this essential work.”
Calvin Watson said: “It’s a relief as we thought an emergency team were first coming last Monday, and then last Friday they visited and said it wasn’t dangerous.
“Thanks to SuffolkNews for raising the issue.”
A leak in the road was also fixed in Whiting Street, this week.
Water was first spotted on Tuesday, February 6, outside candle shop Buy The Light.
Anglian Water closed the road last night to fix the leak.
