Garden at The Spread Eagle, in Out Westgate, Bury St Edmunds, could be set for makeover under plans submitted to West Suffolk Council

A town pub’s garden could be set for a makeover after plans were submitted to a council.

Tim Adams’ application for the refurb at The Spread Eagle, in Out Westgate, Bury St Edmunds, was validated by West Suffolk Council on Wednesday.

A design and access statement detailed the proposed works including the installation of three timber-framed pergolas on the existing main patio area.

These would be finished with a clear polycarbonate roof.

This would be complemented by a new resin footpath and matching steps as well as an arbor to highlight the main entrance.

The children’s play area at the pub would gain a new picket fencing and gate under the plans.

The statement described The Spread Eagle as a ‘great family pub in the heart of Bury’ and said it would remain a public house.

It added the pub had recently experienced a demand for more outside seating and the application was ‘crucial’ for the pub to ‘continue to thrive’.
