Bury St Edmunds Farmers Market cancelled as strong winds to hit Suffolk over weekend

A town’s market has been cancelled due to safety concerns as strong winds are set to sweep across the county.

Organisers of Bury St Edmunds Farmers Market, set for Sunday, December 8, have been forced to cancel the popular monthly event which would have seen more than 40 stallholders lined along The Traverse.

The cancellation comes after The Met Office placed a yellow weather warning for wind in Suffolk over the weekend as Storm Darragh could bring wind speeds between 40mph to 70mph.

Organiser Justine Paul said: “We had really hoped that the worst of the winds might have passed us by Sunday but there are real concerns of gusts of over 45mph and the safety of the public and stallholders must come first.

“The farmers market now has a break over the festive and new year period — so we look forward to welcoming everyone back then.”

The market, organised by Suffolk Market Events, will return to Bury on Sunday, February 9 and there will be other Christmas farmer markets in Lavenham on Sunday, December 15 and in Sudbury on Friday, December 20.
